Listing Description
At the western end of Plaka, on steep rocks, the church of Panagia Korfiatissa was built in 1810. The location is known as “Halara”, while the area in front of the temple is known as “Marbles”, due to the fact that the courtyard of the temple is paved with marble tombstones from the old town.
Visiting the Genesis of the Virgin or Panagia Korfiatissa, in addition to enjoying wonderful sea views and stunning sunsets, you will see relics from the old abandoned churches of the island, images of Cretan Byzantine art from the churches of Zefymenia, small the wood-carved, gilded iconostasis of the church, as well as the gilded epitaph of 1600 from Panagia Skiniotissa, which is brought from Smyrna.
